The Ultimate Checklist for Your Boudoir Photography Day in New York
Hi there! I’m a boudoir photographer based in New York, and I’m here to help you get ready for one of the most exciting photo sessions you’ll ever have—your boudoir shoot! Whether you’re doing this for yourself, your partner, or just to feel empowered, I want to make sure your day goes as smoothly and beautifully as possible.
Over the years, I’ve worked with many amazing women who were nervous at first but ended up loving every second of their session. One thing that helped them all was being prepared. So today, I’m sharing my ultimate checklist to help you feel confident, comfortable, and camera-ready on the big day.
Let’s get into it!
1. Outfits That Make You Feel Amazing
Start with your outfits. Choose 2–4 looks that make you feel beautiful and powerful. You don’t have to wear only lingerie—think about what fits your style. Here are a few ideas:
-
Lingerie sets: Choose colors and fabrics that you love.
-
Oversized sweater: Super cozy and sexy at the same time.
-
Button-down shirt: Maybe even your partner’s!
-
Bodysuits: These are flattering and stylish.
-
Corsets or garter belts: Great for that vintage pin-up look.
Don’t forget to bring matching or neutral underwear, especially if you’re wearing something sheer. And if you’re not sure what works best, I’m always happy to help you decide.
2. Shoes and Accessories
Even though you might be barefoot for most of the shoot, a great pair of heels can take your look to the next level. Think strappy heels, thigh-high boots, or something sparkly.
Bring a few accessories, too—think jewelry, hats, or even a cute robe. Sometimes a simple necklace or a pair of earrings adds that perfect final touch.
3. Hair and Makeup
This is your chance to go a little glam! I always recommend professional hair and makeup for boudoir shoots. It boosts your confidence and gives your photos that polished finish.
If you’re doing your own, give yourself plenty of time and go for:
-
Soft waves or curls (they photograph beautifully).
-
Lashes: Even natural ones can pop on camera.
-
Flawless foundation and contouring: It helps with the lighting.
-
Bold or nude lips: Whatever feels more “you.”
A makeup artist can also stay during the session for touch-ups if you'd like that option.
4. Nails and Skin Prep
Your hands and feet will show in your photos, so be sure your nails are neat. They don’t have to be fancy—clean, trimmed, or with a fresh coat of polish is perfect.
For skin prep:
-
Moisturize the night before and the morning of.
-
Stay hydrated (water is your best friend!).
-
Avoid tanning right before (to prevent orange tones or streaks).
-
Shave or wax (if you do) at least a day in advance to avoid irritation.
Don’t stress over skin imperfections. I promise, between posing, lighting, and editing—we’ve got you covered!
5. Eat, Sleep, and Chill
Boudoir photography is fun but also takes energy. A well-rested, happy you = the best photos.
-
Sleep well the night before.
-
Eat something light but filling the morning of your session.
-
Arrive on time so you’re not rushing or stressed.
Also, it’s okay to feel nervous! That’s totally normal. I’m here to guide you every step of the way, so you never have to worry about “how to pose” or “what to do with your hands.”
6. Personal Touches
Some of the best photos come from personal details. Maybe you want to bring:
-
A letter from your partner.
-
A favorite perfume you always wear.
-
A special piece of jewelry or family heirloom.
-
Something that shows your hobbies or career (I once had a client bring her ballet slippers!).
It’s your story—let’s tell it your way.
7. Mindset and Positivity
This might be the most important part of your checklist. Come in with a heart full of love—for yourself. Boudoir is not about being perfect. It’s about being real, raw, and confident in who you are today.
Talk to yourself with kindness. Practice a few poses in the mirror and smile at your reflection. Think about why you're doing this—maybe it’s to celebrate a birthday, a body transformation, a new beginning, or just because you deserve it.
8. A Bag with the Essentials
Here’s a quick list of what to pack in your bag:
-
Outfits (plus backups!)
-
Nude and black undergarments
-
Heels or fun shoes
-
Jewelry and accessories
-
Hairbrush or comb
-
Lipstick for touch-ups
-
Water bottle
-
Snacks (yes, please!)
-
Makeup remover wipes
-
Lotion or oil (unscented is best)
Bonus tip: Pack everything the night before. That way, you’re not scrambling the morning of.
9. A Little Extra Confidence Boost
Here’s the secret—confidence doesn’t always come naturally, and that’s okay. Sometimes it’s something we choose, just like we choose our clothes or poses. You’ve already done the hardest part by deciding to do this session. Now, trust that you’re going to shine. Because you will.
And if you ever feel unsure during the shoot, I’ll be your biggest hype girl. I’ll show you a few shots as we go so you can see how incredible you look. Most of my clients leave the session glowing—and not just from the lights.
Final Thoughts
Your boudoir day is about celebrating you. It’s not about fitting into a certain mold or being anyone other than your true, powerful self. In New York, we have all kinds of women—busy moms, entrepreneurs, teachers, artists—and every single one brings her own magic.
So take a deep breath, pack your bag, and walk into your session like the queen you are. This is your moment. Let’s make it unforgettable.
